The Coalition says net zero policies have pushed up power prices; climate groups such as the ACF say renewables with storage are the most affordable option, and the Government says the plan would leave households to pick up the bill of global shocks. What evidence would help settle what drives your bills?

What this means

What the Coalition proposes

The ABC reported an eight-point plan: repeal the Climate Change Act 2022 and its net zero commitment, remove the safeguard mechanism, repeal vehicle efficiency standards, revoke four offshore wind zones (Hunter, Illawarra, Southern Ocean and Bunbury), repeal nuclear prohibitions, introduce a renewable energy code of conduct, attach affordability and reliability conditions to state funding, and refocus the Australian Energy Regulator on affordability.

The Coalition's stated case

The Liberal Party's policy page says power prices are far too high under Labor and that emissions have gone backwards, and proposes lifting the nuclear ban, supporting coal and gas, doubling fuel reserves and introducing a gas reservation policy.

Context reported by the ABC

The ABC noted that no offshore wind projects are yet operating, about a dozen projects hold licences, and that CSIRO analysis finds solar and wind cheaper than coal; the Coalition argues the offshore wind push has failed. The ABC also noted that repealing the nuclear ban would need support in the Senate.
